HOSPITALITY & LEISURE

PERHENTIAN CAMP

Stop - Think - Experience

MAPPING

INSPIRATION

STOP

Why Perhentian Island being called “perhentian”? It was the stop-point between Thailand, Kedah and Terengganu.

Time for ‘us’ as designers to set a pause, to think, What can we do to offer a design that celebrates these intersections and how does it positions itself within the context?

THINK

These questions leads us to trace the origins: the rich culture and environmental contexts. It’s time to hit the “stop” button and re-think how can we integrate PEOPLE, CULTURE and NATURE within our design?

Allow visitors to celebrate the mother nature elements - Sky, Water and ‘Greens’ which are missing in the rapid urban life. Shall we have a break and enjoy these elements within a secure, private, and experiential setting ?

The design draws inspiration from the traditional Malay and vernacular architecture.

EXPERIENCE

The design re-invent a  space as the stop (“perhentian”) for the visitors : stop and rethink what is in the existence , the present : The Sun , The Ocean  and The Forest. The vanishing traditional culture and skill becomes the inspirations. It is a place for us to appreciate what we have and what should we admire & preserve

STOP :01 BOAT MAKING SKILL

THINK

The traditional fishing boat-making skills is vanishing.

People are relying on fast modern speed boats.

EXPERIENCE

The occupants will be able to experience a sense of lightness influenced by the elemental and skeletal nature of boat-making.

STOP :02 INTIMACY BETWEEN PEOPLE & GREEN

THINK

Rapid urban development has hasten our daily lifestyle.

We walk , eat and think faster.  It’s time for us to give our body a break, set a pause and let our body and senses harmonize with the green and enjoy the gift by mother nature.

EXPERIENCE

The design attempts to create seamless boundary with nature.

It allows the users to subconsciously connect themselves with the surrounding environment

STOP :03 INTIMACY BETWEEN PEOPLE AND ACTIVITY

THINK

Digital gadgets are slowly taking over the traditions.

How many of us today cherishing the beauty of traditional games?

Here we are attempt to create the best way to integrate traditional games into physical environment to educate the younger generation.

Gasing – one of the traditional games for the Malay community. There are few origins to the stories about gasing;  one of the most relevant to our design philosophy about “gasing” was derived from Buah Bergembang - one kind of fruit usually grow along the coastal area.

Ga-Sing = Ga: Light and Straight + “Sing” : Spinning

This story inspired us about the solidness and playfulness of gasing that can be reinterpret to the kids.

EXPERIENCE

The physical building forms a metaphor of playing tool for the occupants and Each components attempt to create surprises and fun to the users to carry out the amusing experience of playing Gasing.

This project attempts to create several STOP points for the visitors. It prompts us to RETHINK what is in existence and what we should preserve. The project concept draws inspiration from OUR tradition, culture and natural elements. These elements were uncovered to the visitors and ALLOW visitors to EXPERIENCE
